A GM Faces the Jerome Gambit (Part 1)

How many players of grandmaster strength have faced the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+)?

I can think of Joseph Henry Blackburne, author of the notorious 1884 dismantling of the opening.


(Please, let's not revisit the "urban legend" that Alekhine lost to the Jerome. Thank you.)


Of course, if we step outside the main lines and include the Open Italian Four Knights Jerome Gambit (otherwise known as the Noa Gambit, or the Monck Gambit- 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 Nxe4 5.Bxf7+ - then we can add , Charousek, Euwe, Lasker, Marco, Marshall, Tarrasch, Teichmann, and Zukertort, for starters.


For today, let's not go there, either.


Still, I have just learned of a Jerome Gambit, played at bullet speed, online, against a grandmaster.


Let me share some recent exchanges of email with the legendary Australian "Cliff Hardy", player of the white pieces. There will be some move references, but do not let them distract you - I will be presenting the game, with annotations, in due time.

Sorry to inundate you with another game but, after playing the Jerome Gambit for years, I finally got my first chance to play a Jerome Gambit against a GM! It was GM Yasser Quesada Perez, from Cuba.  
Unfortunately, I didn't win ðŸ˜­... 
Because GM Quesada Perez is quite new to Lichess - our game was only his 15th bullet game on the site - his bullet rating on Lichess is comparatively low for his standard of chess (his standard FIDE rating is much higher at 2572) and so I expect it will soon probably go a lot higher than it was at the time of this game.

Very glad to receive your game against Quesada Perez! 
Certainly provides one answer to the question "How would a GM respond to the Jerome Gambit??" 
Of course, it still leaves unanswered things like "How can you play such a coherent game with 1 second a move thinking time?" 
I have been going over the game, and will try to treat it with both a sense of respect and wonder when I post it on my blog - with you, your opponent, and my good pal, Stockfish 10, playing way over my head, it's a bit of a challenge to make sense of, and then share with readers. But, that's the whole point, I guess. 
[Black's 9th move] gave me a chuckle. It's a novelty, according to The Database, although your game later could transpose into a couple of online games from 2017. I can imagine the GM thinking: The only thing wrong with my position is that White may think he has an attack; so, let's exchange queens, and the rest will work itself out. No need for concrete analysis, especially in a bullet game.
Chances are, similar thinking produced [Black's 6th move]. It would be scary think a GM actually had a refutation to the Jerome Gambit in his repertoire. Most likely he thought (or just reacted) he'd settle for something reasonable, and figure the rest out later. I have seen that kind of thinking in numerous defenses to the Jerome - but the players were not super strong, and the "figuring" was much less effective.Stockfish 10 raises it's eyebrows only at [Black's 17th move], and its recommended followup for White is complicated and not at all clear to me, at least at this point - reaching =/+ in some lines, which has got to be the same as "=" in a bullet game (unless I'm playing, when it would be "-++" )
Nice game. Good to see you taking it to "the man". I mean - why not? I would do the same - although the comment was never truer than, for me, "After 1.e4, White's game is in its final throes".

I was initially afraid you might not want to see the game, as it was a loss where I never really even got a great position, but I was quite excited to finally get a chance to play a GM with the Jerome. I was also quite glad I didn't botch it by just hanging a queen on move 8 or so ðŸ˜‰. 
Yes, I think he made it all up because he seemed to spend a bit more time on the first few moves. Now that Lichess shows move times, I can see that he took a "whopping" 2.0 seconds to play [his 6th move] 😉 , so it was one of his slowest moves in the game ðŸ˜‰. He spent even longer on [his 9th move]  (2.9 seconds on that move) so I guess he was trying to work out some sort of defence that would work best for him, like you said. Unfortunately, I tried to move too quickly and played [my 10th move] there - although who knows, technically [an alternate 10th move] is not that much better a move anyway... 
Yes, I noticed with the analysis that the computer didn't like [Black's 17th move] - but that was way over my head too! ðŸ˜‰ It was good fun to try against the GM and I will try to remember to throw in [the alternate 10th move] next time [his 9th move] is played. 
Also, it shows how there are so many GM's in the world - there's always some you've never heard of - or, at least, I'd never heard of this guy before this game!

Jerome Gambit: Noticing A Tactic

Here we have another 1-minute bullet game from Angel Camiña, who notices a common tactic in the Jerome Gambit - 
the Queen check that also attacks an unprotected minor piece. Black could
have continued in the game, but he would have done so a pawn down.

Jerome Pawns Have Mercy!

I just received another bullet game (1 minute, no increment) Jerome Gambit game from Cliff Hardy that ends rather brutally. I will leave the comments up to him, and add diagrams.

This is a bullet game played on Lichess, where the Jerome pawns were rather merciless:

4...Kxf7 5. Nxe5+ Nxe5 6. Qh5+ Ng6?! 


The ever popular defence.

7.Qd5+ Ke8 8.Qxc5 Nf6 9.Nc3 d6 10.Qe3 Be6?!


The regular mistake, which leads to a slight advantage to Black, and was inferior to 10...Kf7, with a clear advantage to Black.

11.0-0?!

11.f4 would have been more direct and better

11...Qd7?!

Now things are fairly equal but 11...Nh5!? 12. d4 Rf8 would have restrained White from playing the dangerous advance f4, and still kept a very healthy advantage for Black.

12.f4 Bf7 13.f5 Ne5?!

Encouraging the Jerome pawns to go on the march and yielding White a clear advantage, whereas the defensive 13...Ne7 would still have led to equality. 

14.d4 Nc4 15.Qg3 Bg8

Black tries to prevent the fork of Black's queen and bishop via the White pawn advance e4-e5-e6, though 15...Qe7 would have been a better attempt at doing that.

16.e5 dxe5 17.dxe5 Nd5 18.e6 Qc6 


19.Bg5?

Still winning, but missing that I could have now simply played the superior 19.Qxg7

19...Nxc3 20.Qxc3 Qc5+ 21.Kh1 Kf8

Trying to shield his rook on h8 from attack but there is no defence any more to White's overpowering pawns.

Jerome Gambit: King of the Hill

Experienced Jerome Gambit players may well tell themselves "I have seen everything" when it comes to our favorite opening. The following game, however, recently played by "Cliff Hardy" may test that point of view.

I mean, have you ever used the Jerome in a blitz speed "King of the Hill" game? Enjoy. But maybe after a cup of coffee.

Notes are (mostly) by Cliff.

This Jerome Gambit game was played in a Lichess "King of the Hill" tournament ("King of the Hill" is a chess variant where a player wins either with checkmate or by getting their king to one of the 4 central squares - e4, d4, d5 or e5).

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+



Unfortunately, Stockfish dislikes this move more in "King of the Hill" than in a normal game as it helps Black to get his king towards the centre and it rates this as -3.7 pawn advantage for Black. (Lichess has a function where Stockfish can actually annotate the game, even though it is a "King of the Hill" game)!

4...Kxf7 5.Nxf7+ Nxf7+ 6.Qh5+ g6!


A good defence, though 6...Ke6!, getting the king towards the centre squares, is also strong. Both moves give Black around a -6 advantage, so 6.d4 (avoiding this) was a technically better move.

7.Qxe5 d6 8.Qxh8?

In a normal chess game, White would have a winning advantage in this particular position. Conversely though, this line is actually very strong for Black in King of the Hill (-11) as Black has good chances of getting his king to the centre, so retreating the queen with 8.Qg3 was a much better attempt for White.

8...Qf6

OK (-3.5), but the Blackburnesque 8...Qh4! (-11) was much stronger.

9.Qxh7+??

In a normal chess game, this move would be fine in this position but actually Black has a forced win in 5 moves in "King of the Hill".

9...Ke6!

Black now threatens to win the game on the spot by getting his king to one of the central squares with 10..Ke5!

10.d4 Bxd4??

Black had a forced win in 3 moves, using a brilliant "King of the Hill" tactic here with 10...Qxf2+!! 11.Kxf2 (11.Kd1 Qxd4+! 12. any Ke5 0-1!, as black's king has reached one of the 4 central squares) 11...Bxd4+ 12. any Ke5 0-1!

11.f4

To stop black winning immediately with ...Ke5.

11...d5??

Black should have thought of normal chess and just saved his knight with 11...Ne7 +-.

12.Qxg8+ Kd6 13.Nd2??


We keep being confused by this variant and missing simple moves that work just as well as in a normal chess game - 13.Qxd5+ kept a winning advantage for white here.

13...Qxf4??

14.Nc4+! dxc4 15.Bxf4+ Kc5 16.Qd5+ Kb4 17.a3+ Ka4 18.b3+ cxb3 19.cxb3 mate

(Wow. The game reminds me of a heavyweight boxing match, where one pugilist is behing on points and has only one chance for success - a knockout. In this case - a checkmate. Like I have said before, you can't take "Uncle Jerome" anywhere - even a King of the Hill game - without him causing a disturbance. - Rick)

Jerome Gambit: Finish Him Off

The following position arose in the recent 1-minute Jerome Gambit game xjjettx-ViswanathanAdam04 at lichess.org. (I still can not wrap my head around the idea of playing the Jerome Gambit in bullet chess.)



It is White to make his 47th move. What is his quickest win? Remember, since it is a 60-second game, so if White has spent a second on each move played so far, he has only 14 seconds left to complete the game, so it is time to think fast.

If you saw 47.Rc8 (or 47.Rc7) followed by 48.Rh8 (or 48.Rh7) checkmate, good for you!

Instead, White played 47.Rf6, which allows the saving 47...R-any
freeing up the c-pawn to advance and Queen.

White was not the only player in time trouble, however, and after 47...Kh4 48.Rxg6 Black surrendered a pawn, allowing White hope to promote, as well.

That proved unnecessary, however, as after 48...Rf1 White checkmated, after all, with 49.Rh6.


So much of bullet chess is rapid assessment - and rapid moving - and in this case it was useful to visualize: 

Black un-blocking his c-pawn with a Rook move that checked White's King, gaining the needed tempo to promote (that is why White had moved his King to the protected square f4 just before we joined the game);

White's King and pawn hemming in Black's King, allowing for his Rook to achieve reaching the 8th rank followed by checkmating on the h-file; 

Later, Black un-blocking his c-pawn by moving his Rook anywhere (checking the enemy King was no longer necessary, as White's Rook had left the c-file); and

White realizing that the position had changed, and changed again, so that Black's King was again hemmed in, and checkmate was available.

Jerome Gambit: Sending Pieces to the Wilderness

In the following game, Bill Wall sends one piece, then another, far from the action - or so it seems. Each returns, only to be traded off - yet they are active in helping win the game. The final position is very interesting.

An unusual defense, but, according to The Database, one faced by other Jerome Gambiteers such as blackburne, chessmanjeff, drumme, HauntedKnight, jfhumphrey, stretto, Teterow, and yorgos. Black, having to lose a piece, decides not to move either, but develops a piece instead.

Further development. Black has castled-by-hand and has seen to his piece development. What will White do? It looks like White has sent his one developed piece off on a risky pawn-hunt, but the Knight still has influence on the center, and the first player still has things under control - thanks, in part, to the "Jerome pawns". 

14.f5 Qf6 15.Bf4 Ne5 16.Nd5 Nxd5 17.Qxd5+ Nf7 18.Bxb8 Re8 



White has retrieved (and traded off) his far-flung Knight, and now has a Bishop off in the wilderness (admittedly, it captured a Rook). An interesting comparison can be made between the two Bishops left on the board, as one is actively involved, while the other is a passive observer.

19.Rae1 Kh8 20.e5 Qe7  21.Bd6 Nxd6 



The Bishop, too, is exchanged, but by now White has a powerful, checkmating attack.

 22.f6 gxf6 23.cxd6 Qe6 24.exf6 Black resigned



What a position!

Black can simply take White's Queen with 24...Qxd5, but it will be checkmate in a few moves after 25.Rxe8+ Qg8 26.f7! 

Black's best option is to win two Rooks for his Queen with 24...Qxe1 25.Rxe1 Rxe1+ 26.Kf2 but it is clear that he has no way of dealing with White's advanced pawn, for example 26...Re6 27.Qg5 or 26...Re8 27.f7.
