Jerome Gambit: Both Knights

The following blitz game moves quickly to the endgame - one which is both educational and a bit humorous.

Pablo_sko - Dominator696969

3 0 blitz, lichess.org, 2025

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+

4...Kxf7 5.Nxe5+ Nxe5 6.d4

At first 6.d4 was Alonzo Wheeler Jerome's choice, although later he switched to 6.Qh5+.

6...Bxd4 7.Qxd4 Qf6

With the small trap, if now 8.Nc3 or 8.O-O, then 8...Nf3+ would lead to the win of the White Queen. This idea goes back to the correspondence game Jerome - Norton, 1876 (16 moves, unfinished).

8.c3

White says Yes, I see it. I would have preferred the developing 8.Be3.

8...Ne7 9.O-O N7c6 10.Qd5+ Qe6 11.f4

Allowing the exchange of Queens, which is usually fovorable for Black in the Jerome Gambit, as it blunts White's attack.

However, that is not the case here.

11...Qxd5 12.exd5

White misses the intermezzo 12.fxe5+ when 12...Kg6 13.exd5 Nxe5 would produce a position where material would be equal, but in which the first player's King would be safer. But, remember, this is a 3-minute game; things happen.

12...Nb4

Both of Black's Knights are under attack, but he knows that White can capture only one of them. Can Black get this Knight to c2, to threaten the Rook at a1?

No. It was better to try 12...Nd3 13.dxc6 bxc6 with an edge.

13.fxe5+ Black resigned

The second Knight will be lost as well.

Jerome Gambit: Too Fast For Me

I continue to be amazed at the interesting chess created by regular contributor angelcamina - played at one minute a game.

That's too fast for me. My heart raced as I played over the following game - and I was simply sitting at my computer, composing.

BSJG: Hunting the Uncooperative King

The Following Blackburn Shilling Jerome Gambit game features a King hunt, and a very uncooperative King.

White eventually corralled the monarch, but not without effort.

Jerome Gambit: Black Wins By Force, White Wins By Farce

If Bill Wall plays the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) against you, be aware that he has over 1,000 games in The Database, scoring 90%.

Even if he starts slowly, as in the following game, he is likely to take what he is given (especially if his opponent is generous) and work his way toward an advantage.

Wall, Bill - Mazloom

SparkChess, 2024

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+

4...Kxf7 5.Nxe5+ Nxe5 6.Qh5+ Ng6

7.Qd5+ Ke8 8.Qxc5 d6 9.Qe3 Nf6

Bill suggests the aggressive 9...Qh4 first

10.h3

He has also tried 10.f3, meeting 10...Kf7 with 11.O-O in Wall,B - Guest1105387, PlayChess, 2014 (1-0, 30) and 11.d4 in Wall, B - Guest3544144, PlayChess, 2013 (1-0, 35).

He met 10...Be6 with 11.f4 in Wall,B - Guest564723, PlayChess.com, 2019 (1-0, 29); and he met 10...Nh5 with 11.Nc3 in Wall,B - Jojop, SparkChess, 2024 (1-0, 20),.

Bill has tried 10.Nc3 in Wall,B - Iverka, Sparkchess, 2024 (1-0, 26) and 10.O-O in Wall,B - Dasasary, internet, 2024 (1-0, 34)

10...Kf7 11.O-O Re8 12.d3

Mazloom has done well. Soon he will castle-by-hand. He is applying pressure to White's e-pawn.

Bill needs to remain diligent and find his moment.

12...d5 13.f3

Bill has deployed this Queen-behind-pawn-phalanx, in Wall,B - Guest1590349, PlayChess.com, 2020 (1-0, 44).

13...d4

It is tempting to harass the enemy King, but this allows White to expand his pawns in the center. Instead, 13...Kg8, completing his artificial castling, was to be preferred.

14.Qe1 Kg8 15.f4

In a funny way, I am reminded of a line that the Joker had in the 1989 "Batman" movie, where the villain, puzzled, said "Where does he get those wonderful toys?"

Bill's e- and f-pawns will cause havoc in Mazloom's position, making use of the mobile center that the first player has been gifted.

15...Qe7 16.Nd2 Qc5 17.Qd1 Bd7 18.Nb3 Qb6 19.a4

White is down a piece, and has only 2 of his pieces developed, compared to Black's 5, but Stockfish 16.1 evaluates the position as less than a pawn better for Black.

19...c5 20.e5 Nd5 21.e6

Bill shows his sense of humor: the pawn can be captured 3 different ways, but each would lead to the pawn fork 22.f5.

21...Bc6

Black wants none of it, but now the intruder can be reinforced.

22.f5 Nge7 23.Qg4

23...Ne3

Forking White's Queen and Rook, but overlooking the fact that the Knight can be captured in it's advanced placement.

To quote from an earlier post, "My Turn Again"
After all, as we say in the Jerome Gambit Gemeinde, "Black wins by force; White wins by farce."

24.Bxe3 dxe3 25.f6

Those White pawns!

As the villains say in many Scooby Doo episodes ...and I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling pawns, er, kids...

25...Ng6 26. f7+ Kf8 27. fxe8=Q+ Kxe8 28. Rf7 e2

Okay, Black has a sense of humor, too. This pawn is going nowhere.

29.a5 Qb4 30.Qxe2 Nf4 31.Qe5 Black resigned

White's Queen has slipped by Black's pieces, and has a checkmate-in-8.

Counter the Annoying Defense

As if in response to my previous plea (see "Please, Sir, I Want Some More"), regular contributor Yury V. Bukayev sends his latest Jerome Gambit game. His opponent is V. Sokolov from Russia.

Thank you, Sir.

Yury said he wanted to try something different here.

The Database has 5,059 games reaching this position, with White scoring 55%.

7.f4 d6

Ah, yes, The Silicon Defense, otherwise known as "The Annoying Defense." A favorite of computer programs, it appears in over 500 games in The Database. White's scoring drops to 45%.

But, like I said, Yury was prepared.

8.fxe5 dxe5 9.a3

According to The Database, this move was a novelty.

9...a5 10.d3 a4 11.b4

 This was, as Yury wrote

...a part of my idea 11...ab 12.Bb2 Bd4!? 13.c3 Bb6 14.d4 ed, where White gets a sharp position with a lot of checks.

Instead, Black counters with what he believes is a strong attack on the enemy King, while threatening a Rook.

11...Qd4

Stockfish 16.1, though is not impressed, as it quickly jumps to evaluating the position as "0.00", a clear draw. Seeing that White has only one pawn for a sacrificed piece, the computer "believes" that the first player would be happy to split the point.

Not so.

12.bxc5

Offering the Rook in exchange.

12...Qxa1

Grabbing the piece, but, perhaps overlooking that his Rook, too, is in danger.

13.Qe8+

And now 13...Ne7 would lead to 14.Qxh8, but that was Black's best chance.

13...Kf6 14.O-O+ Black resigned

There will be checkmate with 14...Bf5 15.Rxf5.

Please, Sir, I Want Some More

In Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, the young boy asks, "Please, sir, I want some more."

In search of more Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) games, I have set a Google Alert for "Jerome Gambit". Alas, more than 90% of the time, it finds either posts on this blogor the game Amateur - Blackburne, London, 1884 - the best known Jerome Gambit game, and, for many, the only one known.

Even as The Database approaches 100,000 entries, I continue to search for new Jeromes, especially from those who encounter this blog.

Readers who have sent games and analysis, I thank you. My email address can be found in the About Me section on the right, under Search This Blog.

Yet, I ask "Please, sir, I want some more."

Jerome Gambit: Fortune Favors the Bold

It is often not enough to play the bold Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+), it is necessary to play the Jerome Gambit boldly, as the following game shows.

The lichess.org player anilone has 315 games in The Database, scoring 51%. His rating has hovered around 2000.
