Jerome Gambit: Testing Instincts

If you know the Jerome Gambit well, it can be an ideal weapon for blitz play.

Given enough time, defenders can work out, over-the-board, a way to handle the Jerome. However, time devoted to that opening analysis is not available later on in the game - in the middlegame and the endgame.

Of course, it is possible to avoid a time forfeit - by limiting how deeply you analyze.

In sum, one virtue of the Jerome Gambit is that: In solving the defense, Black can run into time issues; in guarding his clock, he limits how deeply he can analyze.

Consider the following game with "a dynamic opening that tests [Jerome Gambit players'] instincts to exploit their opponent's mistakes - Alexx"..

The ?'s and !s have been supplied by Alexx. I have added diagrams and made a few comments in blue - Rick

Abrahams Jerome Gambit: Stay on the Path

The path to safety or advantage for Black in the Abrahams Jerome Gambit is narrow, which makes it a good choice with White for players of the original Jerome Gambit.

Jerome Gambit: Know Your Place in the (Chess) World

Know Chess

@KnowChessYT

I just ran across the enticingly-named video from Know Chess, titled "Every Chess Opening From Bad to Genius Explained!".

Starting from the most "Bad", The Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) can be found in third place, behind  Fool's Mate (1.f4 [or 1.f3] e5 2.g4 Qh4 checkmate) and the Fred Defense (1.e4 f5 2.exf5).

I won't argue with Know Chess. After all, it is good to know your place in the world. The chess world, that is.

(Just for fun: The Database, closing in on 66,000 games, shows White scoring 53%, which certainly isn't top of the line, but isn't chopped liver, either.)

Jerome Gambit: The Gutter Holds No Fear

Another high-speed checkmate, courtesy of angelcamina.

1 0 bullet, lichess.org, 2026

1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+

4...Kxf7 5.Nxe5+ Nxe5 6.Qh5+ Ng6

Business as usual.

7.Qd5+ Ke8 8.Qxc5 d6 9.Qb5+

angelcamina has his eye on the enemy b-pawn. He is not troubled by the old warning, that those who take that pawn will sleep in the gutter. In fact, out of 110 games, he has scored 63%.

9...Bd7 10.Qxb7 Rb8 11.Qxa7 Nf6

White has 4 pawns for a piece. Stockfish 16.1 (25 ply) says the game is even.

The computer recommends 11...Nf4 instead of the text, but I can't agree.

12.Qe3 Kf7 13.Nc3 Re8 14.O-O d5

Hitting the center is the right idea.

15.d3 dxe4 16.dxe4 Kg8

This is an interesting position. Black's pieces are developed and he has open lines for his Rooks. He has a piece for four pawns. Yet, White may be able to make something out of those pawns if he is careful

17.f3 Bc6 18.b3 Bb7 19.Bb2 Ba6 20.Rfd1 Qe7 21.Rd2 Qb4 22.Rad1 Ne5

23.Nd5 Qb7

Black needed to exchange Knights at d5.

Now White's Knight and his uncovered Bishop cause trouble on the Kingside.

24.Nxf6+ gxf6 25.Qh6 Qc6 26.Bxe5 Rxe5 27.Rd7

Black's King appears to have been abandoned by its pieces.

27...Qc5+ 28.Kh1 Qf8

A slip, but 28...Re7 would only have brought on the misery of 29.Rd8+ Rxd8 30.Rxd8 Kf7 31.Qxh7+ Ke6 32.Qg8+Rf7 33.Re8+

Jerome Gambit: The Nature of Bullet

Facing the Jerome Gambit can be dangerous. Doing so at bullet speed can be deadly - things can go wrong, quickly, as that is the nature of bullet.

angelcamina - Himanshu234

1 0 bullet, lichess.org, 2026

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 Bc5 5.Bxf7+

The Italian Four Knights Jerome Gambit.

angelcamina has played this line, according to The Database, in 358 games, scoring 59%. That compares favorably with the overall result in The Database of 41%.

5...Kxf7 6.Nxe5+ Nxe5 7.d4 Bxd4 8.Qxd4 d6

If you had the Black pieces in this postion, you would probably feel comfortable, and with reason. You are up a piece for a pawn, and all you have to worry about is your somewhat exposed King.

9.O-O Ke8

About that King... Black probably should have developed his Rook with 9...Re8 and then put his King on g8.

10.f4 c5

Attacking the enemy Queen is often an attractive idea - especially in a bullet game, where the opponent has to take precious time to assess the threat: dangerous or not?

11.Qa4+ Nc6

The Queen moves, with check, and Black defends quickly with his Knight. At a slower time control, he would have found the stronger 11...Bd7 - but that is the nature of bullet.

12.e5 dxe5 13.fxe5 Qb6

Preparing a discovered check, but Black discovers that he should have played 13...Nd5 instead.

14.exf6 c4+ 15.Kh1 gxf6 16.Nd5 Bd7

The final time clock insult, but the game was already lost.

17.Nxb6 axb6 18.Qxa8+ Black resigned

Checkmate is on the way.

BSJG: Choose the Right Response

When you can think fast, bullet chess - 1 minute, no increment - might be your thing.

When you can remember places that you have been to before - that's an edge you can count on.

In the following game, angelcmina uses both tools - and his opponent can not keep up.

4.Bxf7+

The Blackurne Shilling Jerome Gambit.

4...Kxf7 5.Nxe5+ Ke8 6.Qh5+

Looking at The Database, there are 2,326 games with this position, with White scoring 61%. angelcamina does better in his 50 games with the position, scoring 70%.

Stockfish 16.1 (40 ply) evaluates Black as being about a pawn ahead - but the defender has to choose the right response to this check.

6...Ke7

Possibly chosen quickly, due to the time control. About 20% of those 2,326 games has this move.

The proper course was 6...g6 7.Nxg6 hxg6 (7...Nxc2+ 8.Kd1 hxg6 9.Qxg6+ Ke7 10.Qg5+ [10.d3 Bh6 11.Kxc2 Qf8 12.Bxh6 Nxh6 13.Qg5+ Ke8 14.Qe5+ Kd8 15.Qg5+ Ke8 16.Qe5+ draw] 10...Ke8 11.Qg6+ Ke7 12.Qg5+ draw) 8.Qxh8 Nxc2+ 9.Kd1 Nxa1 10.Qxg8 Qg5 11.Rg1 d6 and Black is better.
