Jerome Gambit: Not Toothless

The Jerome Gambit may be "refuted", but it is not toothless. As Black discovers in the following game, even the most crass tactical shot can be winning, if the defender is not careful.

Wall, Bill - Benjamin

internet, 2023

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+

4...Kxf7 5.O-O Nf6 6.Nxe5+ Nxe5 7.d4 Bb6

Black has to give up a piece. He decides that it will not be the Bishop.

8.dxe5 Nxe4

This capture is an error. After 8...Ne8, Stockfish 15.1 decides that best for White is to draw by repetition, 9.Qf3+ Kg8 10.Qb3+ Kf8 11.Qf3+ etc. An alternative is 9.Qd5+.

9.Qd5+ Kf8 10.Qxe4 d5

11.Qf3+ Ke7

Careless.

12.Bg5+ Black resigned
