Jerome Gambit: Muscle Memory?

angelcamina knows the Jerome Gambit.

He plays it well.

He plays it rapidly.

I have to wonder how much "muscle memory" adds to his frequent successes.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 h6 5.O-O Bc5 6.Bxf7+

The Semi-Italian Four Knights Jerome Gambit.

According to The Database, angelcamina has played the line in 25 games, scoring 72%.

6...Kxf7 7.Nxe5+ Nxe5 8.d4 Bxd4 9.Qxd4 Nc6 10.Qc4+

10...Kf8

angelcamina is 3 - 1 against this move.

Against 10...Ke8 he has scored 2 - 1.

Against 10...Kg6 he has scored 3 - 0.

11.f4

Standard Jerome move.

11...d6 12.b3 Qe7 13.Ba3

Target: the pawn on d6.

13...Be6

Taking the Queen off of the a3-f8 diagonal was a safer idea.

14.Qd3

Stockfish 16.1 goes through quite a dance to convince me that 14.Qb5 would lead to a draw - but angelcamina is not looking for a draw.

14...Kg8 15.e5

As expected.

Black needs to take a deep breath and reassure himself that his position is still a little bit better.

15...dxe5

The clock? Maybe, this is a 1-minute game.

Nerves? Speed can set them jangling.

Trying to figure out a messy position out of a messy opening?

Could be: it is the Jerome Gambit.

The right move is 15...Ne8

16.Bxe7 exf4 17.Bxf6 gxf6 18.Qg6+

The Queen is on a checkmating mission - after picking up substantial material.

18...Kf8 19.Qxf6+ Bf7 20.Qxh8+ Ke7 21.Qxa8 Black resigned
