In yesterday's post (see "King of the Hill") I mentioned that the player kingmaple had 619 entries in the updated 18,000 game New Year's Database of Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+), Blackburne Shilling Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4 4.Bxf7+), and Semi-Italian Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 h6 4.0-0/4.Nc3/4.d3 Bc5 5.Bxf7+) games – and yet he had not been mentioned previously in any post on this blog.
A closer examination of kingmaple's games shows why: he plays a variation of the Scotch Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4 Bc5 5.c3 dxc3 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7 7.Qd5+) which can arise, after a fashion, from a "modern" form of the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+ Kxf7 5.d4 exd4 6.c3 dxc3 7.Qd5+).
(Of course, Black and White have alternative ways of playing in both the Scotch Gambit and the Jerome Gambit that would not lead to this position.)
In my researching, kingmaple's efforts got scooped up with the other Jerome Gambit and Jerome-ish games.

King of the Hill
I noticed today that I (perrypawnpusher) have almost 170 Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) and related games in the updated New Year's Database.
That's not quite as many as Petasluk (175). We're both getting closer to UNPREDICTABLE (213).
Still, I have a good way to go before catching drumme (248) and stretto (270). For the time being, Darrenshome (376) and yorgos (534) are out of reach.
I have no idea how kingmaple can have 619 games in the Database and not have been mentioned on this blog (until now).
Of course, we all trail DragonTail, the "king of the hill" with 1,213 games included.

Half a defense is worse than none at all...
Joseph Blackburne's play against the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) makes a powerful impression: it is a dangerous opening for White to play, one that may lead to a counter-sacrifice and a scintillating checkmate by Black.

Foiled Again!
What follows is a pretty standard Semi-Italian Four Knights Jerome Gambit as played by Bill Wall, where things become quite unlucky for Black at move 13, and the second player's game seems to spiral down out of sight after that.

Untangling Lines of Play
When I meet the Blackburne Shilling Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4) I respond in the Jerome Gambit way with 4.Bxf7+. I have confidence in that strategy, but I am often surprised at how much remains either unexplored or unclear. Lines of play get tangled, and it seems that some knowledge of theory is essential for White's success.

The other day I was looking through Niels Jorgen Jensen, Tom Purser and Rasmus Pape's Elephant Gambit monograph when I ran into something interesting in the "Introduction" that applies equally to the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+)
...it is evident that many openings – the Sicilian Defense, for example – have been diffused almost beyond reasonableness. Consequently, if you play the Sicilian, as black or White, you must accept the probability that your opponent has studied the latest grandmaster variations to the beginning of the endgame.
On the other hand, if you play something off the beaten track – let's say the Elephant Gambit – you can be quite secure that your opponent has no prepared variation; quite the contrary, he will be forced to play chess on his own. This can give you a pronounced psychological advantage: your opponent is likely to be facing his first Elephant, and has studied no variations, and the only thing he might have is some vague recollection of having read that the opening is incorrect, unsound, and unplayable. He will be looking for easy refutations, and may become frustrated when he does not find them. The pressure will all be on him. After all, he will appear ridiculous if he cannot beat an "unplayable" opening.
